professional headshot of dr. antonia novello Dr. Antonia Novello made history in 1990 when she became the first woman and the first Latina to serve as U.S. Surgeon General, but her impact exceeds that milestone. Throughout her career, she focused on something simple and powerful: making sure people had the information and access they needed to take care of their health.

Born in Puerto Rico, Dr. Novello faced serious health challenges as a child, including a congenital condition that required multiple surgeries. Those early experiences helped shape her understanding of what it means to navigate the healthcare system, especially as someone who may feel vulnerable or overlooked. That perspective stayed with her and propelled her work.

As Surgeon General, Dr. Novello used her platform to bring attention to issues that were often ignored or misunderstood. She spoke openly about HIV and AIDS at a time when stigma and misinformation were widespread. She emphasized the importance of education, especially for young people, and worked to make health information more accessible and easier to understand.

health education, and more equitable access to care. Her work consistently centered on communities that face barriers to healthcare, whether due to income, language, or lack of resources.

Dr. Novello believed that health education is one of the most effective tools we have. When people understand their bodies and their options, they are better equipped to make informed decisions. That belief continues to shape public health efforts today.

Access to clear, accurate information and compassionate care can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. Dr. Novello’s leadership reflects the kind of patient-centered, community-focused approach that continues to guide our work.
